Much has been written about this San Francisco, problem-probably the commonest of all allergic diseases in the School of Medicine. United States. It is a significant occupational affliction in agriculSan Francisco. ture, estimated, in the past, to account for 0.11% of workmen’s California compensation.1 This chapter will review important aspects of the allergen(s), clinical manifestations of the disease, and therapy. The family Anacardiaceae includes plants that probably cause more cases of allergic phytodermatitis than all other plant families combined. The genus Twicodendron is the most notorious of the family, containing the plants which cause dermatitis: poison ivy (Toxicodundrorr rudiwns, Toxicodendron rydbergii), poison oak (To.ricodunrlrorl diwrsilobum. Toxicodendron toxicarium), and poison sumac (Toxicodendron vernix).2 The identification and geographic distribution of these species are detailed in chapter 16.

Treatment of toxicodendron dermatitis (poison ivy and poison oak).

Toxicodendron dermatitis results from a reaction to an oil soluble oleoresin that is present in many parts of the poison ivy and poison oak plants. Prophylactic measures include avoidance, protective clothing, barrier creams and hyposensitization. Treatments include washing the area immediately with a solvent suitable for lipids and the use of anti-inflammatory agents, especially corticosteroids.
